Step 5. Evaluation
To understand how your wellness program is working, your workplace has an evaluation process.
Through this process, you can see how your program is making a difference to employees’ health and the workplace environment. It also helps you identify better ways to do things.
Following the evaluation, you distribute results to employees, senior management and stakeholders to promote and celebrate your achievements. You also use the results to inform future planning.
Evaluation indicators and ways to collect information
There are 3 types of evaluation indicators. These indicators measure process, impact and outcome. Together, they allow you to see if the program is effective and highlight areas for improvement. This can help you to secure continuing support and extra resources for your wellness program.
- Process—measuring who is participating and how satisfied they are with the program and activities. You can see how well you are implementing the program.
- Impact—measuring things like employee awareness, knowledge of healthy lifestyle behaviours and intention to change. You can look at the short-term changes resulting from the program.
- Outcome—looking at the long-term results from the program, such as sick leave rates, workers compensation costs and employee health status.
Ways to collect evaluation information include:
- employee evaluation surveys
- feedback forms
- focus groups
- in-depth interviews
- human resource data.
You distribute the evaluation results to employees, senior management and stakeholders.
- Small and medium sized workplaces—you conduct focus groups to evaluate employee satisfaction and participation rates in your wellness program.
- Large workplaces—you use a confidential employee evaluation survey to evaluate the satisfaction and participation rates in your wellness program across all your business units and worksites.
